My friends have always been my target audience. I would put them into my cartoons so they would enjoy them a lot more. As I got older my friends moved away and I realized that these animations were meaningless to other viewers because they wouldn't understand any of the inside jokes or care about the characters.

It dawned on me that I needed to broaden my audience and make cartoons for everyone! In order to do that I would have to create stories that everybody could relate to and I would have to write original characters that people would want to get to know.

If you want to be awesome and original you'll have to start off fresh! Create characters from scratch and introduce them to the audience like you would introduce a friend to a stranger. Get the audience familiar with your character so they can emotionally invest themselves with him/her.

Give your story at least one like-able character. Don't make all of the characters stoners who sit on the couch all day talking about videogames. If you do, give your characters some redeeming qualities so they're not absolute nobodies. For example: In the series DUCKMAN Private Dick/Family Man, Duckman is a pervert, failure of a father, and hated by society but he redeems himself by knowing the true meaning of love and being a good father (sometimes.) "About Face" is one of my favorite episodes in the series because it's one of the few episodes that shows his sensitive side.


I had tons of problems trying to shove all my friends into one cartoon. It made my animation crowded and it was hard to give each of them something to do. The best solution for this problem is to mesh friends of similar personalities together into one character to avoid having clones in the story. Giving a character multiple traits from different people also makes them less 1-dimensional.

I haven't been worrying about story in my animations because they're usually centered around one simple joke and don't require a complex story structure. All of my animations are too short for any character development or plot. I've been too busy with school to invest any time into large projects, but it hasn't held me back from writing them.
